Trauma can be complex to process.
Some trauma persists long after the event. The impact of that traumatic event can result in an emotional upheaval – making it challenging to interact socially or live without fear of a repeat of that event.
Individuals who experience trauma sometimes say, “I can’t get the thought out of my mind!”
Certain sights and sounds trigger you to re-experience the original feelings you had when you first suffered the trauma.
Those memories keep replaying in your head. To quiet those memories, you might practice avoidance of anything (people, places, or other experiences) that can trigger trauma.
Trauma is unique to each person and has many causes. Maybe it’s a traumatic memory of something that happened to you (accident, abuse, natural disasters, death of a loved one, etc.) or perhaps the “voice” in your head that keeps telling you you’re no good. Whatever the cause, trauma can impact you physically and emotionally.
Good news – there is a treatment.
EMDR treatment modality has proven to be effective in helping those suffering from the effects of trauma. This method can help you process those memories so they no longer have power over you, allowing you to reclaim your power.
Unlike some treatments for trauma, EMDR focuses on the feelings you have from the traumatic experience. By using bilateral stimulation such as eye movement or tapping, your memories get processed and filed in your brain appropriately, so they no longer have power over you. Through EMDR, your brain can heal itself, helping you to move forward.
You will learn to redirect those stressful feelings while replacing them with positive thoughts. As a result, you become less sensitive to experiences that trigger painful responses to past trauma.
